Husband helps care for wife's grandmother for years, but when she includes him in her inheritance alongside his wife, tension sparks after she demands spending it on their mortgage, while he insists on investing it instead: 'Wife views it as just hers'

It takes a very kind and generous person to offer their help and time to care for someone else, so we imagine this wife feels extremely lucky to have a husband who was always available to care for her grandmother until her last breath. As expected, within the last few years of her life, the two became very close as he inhabited a generous place in her heart. She even went as far as to include her grandson-in-law in her inheritance, something which surprised their whole family, including his wife! 

However, when all the inheritance was divided through the branches of their family tree, the couple was debating what to do with their portion. However, their intentions did not align, causing friction in the relationship, as the husband soon realized that no matter how boldly his name was written within her will, both his wife and her family would always consider it to be hers…

At the end of the day, they have been married for 10 years, so it is very likely that they already abide by the what's mine is yours relationship anyway…So instead of looking at all the ways their demands vary, they should start paying closer attention to he way they overlap? Or do you agree that, as the biological grandchild, this wife should get the final say?

    My wife and I have been together about 10 years, married 3. Ive known her grandma pretty well the whole time and in the last few years especially I helped her out quite a bit.

  • Even with CDs we'd make more and thats basically risk free. Im fine with a compromise where we do half and half but she thinks its her family's money so I shouldn't even get a say and should just be grateful to have the house paid off which is in both of our names.

  • Old-Assistance-2017 Why can't you invest what you will be saving in a monthly payment once the mortgage is paid off? Edit to add: we paid our mortgage off early even with a good interest rate and it feels very financially secure knowing we don't owe a bank money. So I can agree with your wife's idea.

  • OP Automatic East8697 Well math wise, given our 2.6 rate, we'd most likely make a lot more on my plan. Prior to this we both always expressed a goal of retiring young and this would help us do that the best. When I said I was open to compromise she thinks there should be no compromise since it was her relative and I shouldn't even get a say. Basically she's treating it like its just her inheritance, but legally its both of ours.

You're thinking about interest rates, and she's thinking about the sense of comfort she will feel from using her grandmother's legacy to have a fully paid for house. Have some empathy for that, and consider your wife's feelings here. Not everything is about maximizing profit.

  • OP Automatic East8697 CDs would not be my preferred way to invest it. But they are are incredibly low risk option that would have better ROI than just paying the mortgage early.

  • jrm1102 NAH - I mean it was in fact her grandmother. Its not like shes requesting to use it on something that doesnt benefit you. You just want to do something else with it. Sure, legally yeah its yours too. But id just let her pay the mortgage down and invest the money you save.

  • Chemical_Statement12 You should talk with your wife about why she wants to pay off the mortgage. To see her pov. She probably doesn't trust that you won't gamble the money in day trading. Perhaps she is anxious for being in debt. Does the inheritance covers all the house payment, less, any extra which you might invest? If an objective financial advisor, maybe a woman that you don't personally know can show her the benefits she will have a change of hearth. Find a compromise. Ultimatelly, happy w
